Sant Nishchal Singh Hospital

Sant Nishchal Singh Hospital, a healthcare case study by The Architects Collaborative in Mohali, Punjab

The brief

The hospital needed to keep operating at full capacity while it was being expanded — closing a ward or rerouting an ambulance bay mid-construction was not an option the client could absorb.

Our approach

We planned a single circulation spine as the structural and organizational backbone of the building, with patient, staff and service movement kept on separate paths from the ground floor up. Utilities and structure were sized for three future phases from the first drawing, so each addition could be built without touching a ward already in use.

Outcome

The hospital expanded in three phases without a single ward closure. The spine has since become the reference layout the studio uses on every subsequent hospital brief.
